It s hard for paint to adhere to this glaze so it s important to remove it. Sandpaper with a 220 grit will remove the shine from the tile but won t leave permanent marks. Use a light hand when sanding to avoid damaging the tile s surface. The goal is to get rid of soap scum and hard build up on the tile surface as well as to slightly scuff the tile surface.

It will also rough up the surface. Sanding the tile surface creates a matte finish that helps the paint stick better and longer. Ceramic tile paint is very durable and can be used as floor tile paint if you do a few basics sand clean and prime first. Once the surface is dry lightly sand the tiles to score the surface using 220 grit sandpaper for ceramic tiles.

Wipe the tile down to clean it and remove any sanding dust. Painting floor tiles is so much easier than we ever anticipated. Use 100 grit sandpaper rotating the paper in a circular motion to fully sand the tile down giving you an unblemished surface on which to paint. Glossy surfaces more easily shed paint.

About the only time you d consider sanding ceramic tile would be if you were going to repaint it. When you are finished sanding use a damp cloth to wipe away any sanding grit. This will remove any glaze and help the new paint to adhere better. Choose stencils for an on trend patterned finish.

Although light applications of the 220 grit sandpaper will certainly do the trick a better method is to use a toothbrush to apply nonabrasive cleaners as cleaners of this type will manage to clean not only the smooth surface but also the grout.
