However the shadowbox design carries its own unique advantages that may make this style especially desirable for your property. Contractors affix a picket to one side of the rails then. A shadow box fence has spaces between the pickets to allow air to pass through but the pickets on the opposite side of the fence line up with the gaps to block the view. A few pickets are fixed on one side while the others are attached on the opposite side such that they block out each others gaps. By placing the 2 by 2 stringer vertically flush with the outside faces of the posts the outside wall of the fence would be in a single plane which makes alternating the pickets easier.
