The height is a bit trickier based on the casing and header.
Sliding barn door gap on side.
In the picture you show you could place one piece vertically on the wall side of the door on the end the picture was taken.
I made a custom modern sliding barn door for my parents new house in one weekend.
Barn doors hang from a track outside the room covering the doorway but leaving gaps at the sides between wall and door.
In order to leave space for the baseboard and quarter round which will be exposed once the doors are closed we put in a header and side trims even though they are not required.
For complete coverage and to minimize the gaps make sure the door is at least several inches wider than the opening.
30 opening 34 wide door.
Remember barn doors need to slide at least as far as the opening in one direction or the other.
To have privacy the door usually overlaps the opening by an inch so that a 2 6 opening will require a 2 8 door.
Apply a weather strip the same color as the barn door from top to bottom on the side where the air gap lies if it s only on one side.
We recommend 1 1 2 to 2 of overhang on each side.
Since the door sits off the wall in order to slide it must be wider that the opening to fully hide the opening.
So today i m sharing a diy barn door building plan and 5 lessons i learned installing one.
This step may not be included in your hardware instructions if you bought them separately.
If you still notice wind coming through your sliding barn door relax you just have a little more work to do.
We did build a diy barn door and i learned a lot that i could not have anticipated prior to installing my first barn door.
You may even need to install a second latch above or below the first one to get a good seal along the length of the door.
For the best seal my recommendation would be some pieces of weatherstripping or gasket.
Install the soft close mechanisms before hanging the door slabs.

7 1x6x8 pine boards.
For door you will need.
It looks like the gap is caused by the hardware for this barn style door which is a common scenario.
I planned very hard to have a double sliding barn door installed as part of a basement finishing project.
For example a 4 foot door will cover a 3 foot opening with 6 inches on either side reducing the gaps.
Repeat this step on the bottom of the door.
Here s how i did it with a little help from my partner in crime.
Or you can get a track joiner if you want the doors to be able to slide to either side.
